Uralchem spotted danger of using ozone-depleting chemicals in the industry

And promised to stop using carbon tetrachloride in the nearest future

Uralchem, a producer of mineral fertilizers, looked at the danger of using ozone-depleting chemical in the industry. Olga Spasskaya, Head of Ecology Department of Uralchem, spoke about it on Thursday, during the session “On the way to the ideal industrial safety system” of the International Forum on Industrial Safety, BNA reports.

Carbon tetrachloride is the source of deepest concern for Uralchem’s environmentalists. “This substance is widely used in laboratory work and almost every industrial company has a laboratory”, Olga Spasskaya noted. She assured the audience that Uralchem would stop using carbon tetrachloride completely in the nearest future.

Ozone-depleting chemicals are chlorofluorocarbons that can react with ozone molecules when reaching the atmosphere. Ozone-depleting substances include carbon tetrachloride, 1,1,1,-trichloroethane, halons, methyl bromide and hydrochlorofluorocarbons. In Russia, violations in handling ozone-depleting substances can be subject to legal prosecution.

The International Forum on Industrial Safety is held in St. Petersburg every year. In 2018, it is the 16th time. This year the Forum venue is Hilton Hotel St. Petersburg Expoforum. The conference was attended by more than 170 people from different states. The organizer is GCE Group.
